How to Stay Safe When You Are Running

Posted by on Tuesday, January 17, 2017,

There's a number of great races around the world in or around big cities. From the Laugavegur Ultra in Iceland to the scenic surrounds of Boston Marathon qualifier, the Rockland State Marathon in upstate New York, it is time to start your training and your travel plans if you plan on visiting and competing. I feel it's always worth arriving a minimum three days early so you can recover from the travel, stay injury free and see the sights.

It is important to think about safety when you are...

Preventing Blisters when Running

Posted by on Thursday, October 3, 2013,

How to Prevent Blisters:

Some people are susceptible to them and others aren't but it is much easier to prevent blisters rather than have to treat them. Below are some ideas.

  • If it is going to rain in your run or race, rub in a light coating of olive oil. It waterproofs the foot to a degree. Waterlogged skin gets chewed up a lot more easily than otherwise (think about what your skin is like after a long bath, now think what would happen if you rubbed it over and over!) Corn starch or talc is gr...

One of the Worlds Best Ultra Running Legends

Posted by grahak777 grahak777 on Saturday, June 22, 2013,

Day 5 and Asprihanal lead the mileage for the first time with 71.8 miles. Unusual for the champion Finn, he is taking a while to warm up. He has won the event more than anybody.

Ashprihanal can’t weigh much more than 50 kilograms. He is very otherworldly, almost elf-like, with small chiselled features, light blonde hair and a running engine that rarely falters. His style and gait are more like a dance. He flays his arms all over the place and rocks from side to side, the floating waltz ste...

The Spa Bath

Posted by grahak777 grahak777 on Friday, November 16, 2012,
I looked forward to an epsom salt bath every evening. It wasn't a marbled 5 jet spa/hot tub, just a glorified bucket I only just fitted into. It did wonders for my rash though.

Getting Back to Normal, Post Race Comments and trophy received

Posted by grahak777 grahak777 on Thursday, October 25, 2012,

I had a really fast race this year. It was my PB by nearly a day. I went into it wanting to average 70 miles a day (113km) . I thought I could do it because in 2007 I did 69.8 or something with a really bad blister. If I could stay blister free I thought I could get close.

My start was great, perhaps too fast but I was managing mileage and I didn’t think I would ever achieve it. I was having really nice feelings of power and gratitude especially in the evening. Savagata was also chasi...

The World's Longest Race : Resting and recovering.

Posted by grahak777 grahak777 on Thursday, October 25, 2012,

I was told by someone who knows that the photos that are up of the Self Transcendence 3100 mile race could be better.
Below are some by professional photographer Prabhakar Street.

I have changed my site around to reflect the Perth Motivational Speaker tour I’m doing. That’s how I lost the original blog reposting them now.

People often ask what the prize is for the 3100, I received it at a ceremony. The prize…a plastic tr...

The Offending Chair

Posted by grahak777 grahak777 on Thursday, October 25, 2012,

I had an almost dreadful incident with an inanimate object in the race. Showering and bathing was really pleasant. All the grime collected in the day disappears and the paper tape around blisters and toes comes off really easily. I soon took to shaving and brushing my teeth under the shower. For speed I would shower the traditional way, standing up. If I was really tired I would take the longer option and sit on a flannel on the tiles to take th...

I got a bad rash and lost toenails

The Self Transcendence 3100 mile race

Posted by grahak777 grahak777 on Thursday, October 25, 2012,

Founded in 1997 by fitness guru Sri Chinmoy to exemplify the endless possibilities of the human spirit, the Self-Transcendence 3100-Mile Race is held every year on a concrete footpath around an 883 metre block in Queens, New York. It is the world’s longest and most grueling foot race. Runners are given 18 hours a day, from 6:00 a.m. to midnight, for 51 days, to run a minimum of 60 miles a day (96.6km) to complete the distance. This involves ci...
